Somewhere along the line I developed both a love for pens and a habit for reading with a pen in hand. I remember well showing up my first job as a lawyer in NYC, decked out in a dark skirt suit and equipped with a couple fancy black Montblanc fountain pens that were kind of a thing at the time. Some pens are special because of the way they feel when put to the page, some because of their origin or sentimental value. Either way, for me, using a special pen injects a simultaneous sense of comfort and power into the act of writing.
If you’ve stayed in a Langham Hotel, you might recognize the pretty gold and pink pen pictured below. I’ve gone through several—the first couple I picked up a few years ago, when we went to see U2 play Joshua Tree at the Rose Bowl, and stayed at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena overnight. The one I have with me now hails from the Langham in London, where Kristin, Kristi and I spent an afternoon at high tea last Fall—the pen carries with it all of the sweet memories of that trip and that time.
Less than two weeks before we flew here from Bainbridge, and before we had the remotest clue what we were in for with Covid and quarantining, I went to two DMB shows—the first in Las Vegas and the second, a Christmas present, at the Innings Festival in Phoenix. The festival show in particular was special because Kristin and I had access to the rail—just a few feet from the stage—a rare privilege for those who care about these things (I do). It was a great day, a great memory made, and I’ve been carrying around my Innings water bottle ever since. It feels good to have a reminder of the beautiful before, as we all wait expectantly for what comes next.
Today, this pretty pen and my Innings water bottle are my joy. #joyinplace
